Individual Thesis - No more passion in learning

  • Learning for the sake of learning, and the passion to gain knowledge and skills is becoming rare
    • Pressure
      • College admissions
      • GPA
      • Judged / defined by numbers & statistics
      • Defined by comparison to peers
      • Forces us to always be looking ahead, never living in the moment
    • Cheating / laziness
    • Slipping through HS without preparing for college and/or real life (which would be done by finding out what you love, finding out / practicing your skills)
    • Taking AP's, honors, etc. "for my résumé," or "for my weighted GPA"
    • Everything is done "for my résumé," not because the student is passionate about it, wishes to pursue it later in life or in their career (or simply because they enjoy it)
  • Thesis:
    • Increased competition and new means to evaluate merit have led high school students to focus solely on "how to get into college," rather than to develop a true passion for learning. Such passion would foster a greater sense of well-being amongst students, and would also prove to serve them well throughout life.
  • Interview Qs:
    • How many APs have you taken?
      • How many were you actually a little excited about / interested in?
      • How many did you take "for the weight" or "for college"?
    • Have you ever felt pressure because of your GPA or standardized test scores?
    • What's your greatest fear (in regard to the way you'll be viewed by admissions) when applying to college?
  • Sources of Information:
    • Survey
    • Competitiveness stats
    • Admissions stats for Ivy League
    • Admissions stats for prestigious public schools
    • College counselor services prices
    • Evidence of student illness from school stress
    • Cheating stats
    • Expectations
      • Get a job
      • Get an internship
      • Get good SAT scores / prep a lot
      • "All while maintaining a 4.0 GPA"
      • Take a mission trip
      • Have a life-changing experience (college essay material)
